Multiple Intelligence Theory by Howard Gardner

The Gardner School is named in part by Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences. This theory was originally used for cognitive research, but has since been used by educators around the world to enhance teaching practices for all learning styles. The main intelligences and related activities, however, are not all-controlling with the notion that by avoiding one type of activity, you are depriving a child of one type of learning. We prioritize these intelligences as a guide - by looking at the whole child, we are able to understand and focus on each child's strengths, building their self-esteem and broadening abilities to help. The Gardner School is therefore offering cognitive alternatives to students to be successful and exhibit true heights and excellence in their own unique ways.

  • The theory of multiple Intelligences was developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, psychology professor at Harvard University. The theory suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on IQ testing, is far too limited. Instead, Dr. Gardner proposes eight different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential in children and adults.
These intelligences are:
Linguistic (words) [Reading/writing/communicating]
Logical-mathematical intelligence [Thinking/reasoning/solving]
Spatial intelligence [Images/Visuals/Art]
Musical intelligence [Music/sound/rhythm]
Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence [Physical/hands-on]
Interpersonal intelligence [People smart]
Intrapersonal intelligence [Self smart]
Naturalist intelligence [Nature smart]
